Thomas Lai writes songs that refuse to pick a lane — and that's the point.
A Taiwanese-Canadian singer-songwriter based in Montreal, Thomas grew up with the piano and violin lessons the stereotype would predict — with one difference: nobody made him take them. He asked. By thirteen he had moved past playing other people's music to writing and producing his own, and he hasn't stopped since.
What emerged is a singer-songwriter's sensibility wired into maximalist, theatrical production. His lyrics are personal and tightly structured; the music around them blends pop rock, musical theatre, orchestral arrangement, electronic textures, and the occasional turn toward R&B. It lands in the lane of Jake Wesley Rogers and Conan Gray, with a theatrical streak traceable back through Panic! at the Disco and Mika — singer-songwriter material carrying the production ambition of an arena.
His debut single "Ferris Wheel Romance," recorded in Montreal and released April 17, 2026, marks the beginning of his independent artist journey. A sped-up version arrives in June, followed by a slowed version and the song's first music video in July, with a follow-up single planned for the fall.
